The Maintenance Specialist performs duties as assigned which contribute to the proper functioning and appearance of the Vivarium facility. This job reports to the Maintenance Vivarium Supervisor and works in collaboration with Facility Director.


  • Perform a wide variety of general building preventive maintenance and repair services may include HVAC, electrical, and plumbing
  • Adhere to all OSHA safety procedures and standard operating procedures which are essential for successful operation of a vivarium facility involved with bio-hazards and bio-safety.
  • Perform a wide variety of general building preventive and maintenance operations of vivarium unit and repair services to include animal equipment repairs
  • Log records of repairs and preventative maintenance performed, create and maintain a parts and material inventory and accountability of tools
  • Keep all vivarium areas clean, safe and well organized
  • Maintain departmental standards for animal cage wash facilities operation, facilities condition, sanitation levels and facility security
  • Perform other duties as assigned


    • High school diploma, equivalent; AA or BA and building maintenance certificate in relevant field
    • 3 years of experience and knowledge of general maintenance processes and methods
    • 2 years experience with animal containment and research facility maintenance
    • Manual dexterity and problem-solving skills
    • Able to sit, stand, lift and/or move objects up to 50lbs+, daily use of extremities; hands, fingers to handle objects, tools and/or controls
