JOB CLASSIFICATION: Apprentice Electrician

DEPARTMENT:           Maintenance

REPORTS TO:              Electrical Supervisor

WORK SCHEDULE:      Monday through Friday (7a-3:30p); weekends and overtime as needed



The Apprentice Electrician reports to the Electrical Supervisor and is part of the Maintenance Department.  This position requires industrial electrical experience or equivalent training.  Required knowledge includes but is not limited to: electrical safety, circuits, and electrical theory. The Apprentice Electrician performs general maintenance tasks in addition to doing electrical work. Qualified electrical department employees may be called back to the mill outside of normal hours.



  • Promote a safe working environment in all interactions with plant personnel as well as personally following all safety rules and regulations.
  • Work with single phase and three-phase AC and DC circuits
  • Perform some electrical repair duties with direction
  • Assist with all electrical maintenance such as, but not limited to:
    • Testing electrical and electronic equipment
    • Install, replace and/or repair wiring, receptacles, and switch boxes
    • Air handling, heating, and cooling systems
  • Assist with pulling motors, cleaning, unwiring, re-installing, and lubricating motors and fabricating starters
  • Work to become familiar with all mill electrical circuits, maps, power centers, etc.
  • Assist with preventive and corrective maintenance
  • Learn to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, drawings, and electrical code specifications
  • Assist as needed to repair any broken or defective equipment to avoid paper machine lost time
  • Notify Electrical Supervisor of conditions requiring attention
  • Support the Maintenance team and mill operations by assisting or completing work assigned by Maintenance Supervisor which may not be related to electrical work.
  • Assist with IT electrical support, cable, and telephone wiring for plant and office
  • Replace light bulbs and repair fixture as necessary in all mill and office locations
  • General “housekeeping” and maintenance work as necessary
  • Perform all work in a safe and efficient manner and keep work area in a clean and orderly condition

  • Use hands and fingers to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear
  • Stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch and crawl. The employee is occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.
  • May be required to lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to climb stairwells up to 15 levels high.
  • Ability to ascend and descend ladders (step, extension, cage) up to 24’ high.
  • Able to walk at a normal pace for up to 60 continuous minutes.
  • Able to work from a standing position for 8-12 hours.
  • Ability to twist and bend on a recurring basis.
  • Weather conditions that can be expected are wet, humid, heat and cold, bright/dim light, traffic, heights, and dusts.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity, field vision, hearing, speaking, sense of smell, depth perception, and texture perception.
  • Some environments are in a high noise and vibrating area.




  • Electrician apprenticeship/experience preferred. Work experience in the trade and college or industry courses in industrial electrical equipment accepted.  Must be able to demonstrate skills required in this description.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to drive cars, trucks, forklifts and other industrial vehicles
  • Good interpersonal skills and written and verbal communication skills required
  • Able to take direction, learn new information and skills
  • High School Diploma or Equivalent required
